Memorial Day Kicks Off 100 Deadliest Days for Teens

According to safety experts, Memorial Day weekend is the kick-off of the 100 deadliest days of the year for teen drivers. This 100 day stretch extends through the summer when teenagers are most likely to be out on the road and driving recklessly because they don't have school.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in 2012, nearly 1,000 people were killed in car crashes that involved teenagers in the stretch that reaches from Memorial Day to Labor Day. 88% of the individuals that were killed in these accidents were teenaged drivers.

Studies show that 10% of all drivers under the age of 20 that are killed in automobile accidents are distracted at the time of the crash. Teenagers are more likely to text while driving or use other mobile social apps such as Instagram, Facebook or SnapChat. Another danger that is present on the roads is teens with passengers in their cars.

The National Safety Council completed a study which shows that when teenagers have passengers in their car, it increases their possibility for a crash by 44%. 43 states now restrict new teen drivers from having more than one passenger in their car for the first six months to a year after they get their license. Many states have also created laws to restrict cell phone use among teens.

If you are injured in a crash during the 100 deadliest days, don't hesitate to call a nearby car accident attorney. A local lawyer may be able to argue on your behalf and secure compensation for you in your case. With the right lawyer there to help, you may be able to obtain damages for all wrecked property, medical bills and lost wages during recovery. Call a local attorney today to discuss your accident or to learn more about safety precautions during the dangerous summer months out on the road.
